Here are some of the recipes I’ve featured over the years, including some Lunenburg County specialties. The South Shore is famous for dishes such as blueberry grunt, sauerkraut, turnipkraut, baked beans, and other homemade dishes that stick to your ribs (and thighs). Oh yes, and sometimes we eat fish and lobster too.

Can you tell me how to make turnipkraut, I crave the stuff for years after living on the shore. Please.

I keep meaning to get this recipe for you from my mother. I will soon, I promise! I’m just not sure about boiling off the meat first! 🙂

    Hi Tanya,

Sorry I’m so slack in getting back to you. Here’s the recipe for turnipkraut as we make it in my famdamily.

Boil off some steak or beef strips. Drain to get rid of fat.

Fill big pot with sliced or small chunks of turnip. Simmer with beef until tender. Add a tablespoon of brown sugar to sweeten turnip. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add apple cider vinegar.

I don’t like turnip, but I do like turnip kraut. May try this; the rest of the family will be like, ugh! lol
