The nuts and bolts of nuts and bolts

My grandmother often made this delicious snack during the holidays, so I thought I’d share it with you so you’d make some and bring it to me.

Sure, you can go buy some salted, hydrogenated snack at the store, but wouldn’t you rather make your own… and maybe even hand some out as gifts in decorated jars? Like to me?

Nuts and Bolts

Melt 1 1/2 cup melted butter or margarine in a large saucepan. Make it really healthy and go for organic butter.

Stir in 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce. I’m glad I get to write this instead of say it because I cannot pronounce Worcestershire sauce.


  • 5 cups of shredded wheat squares (AKA Shreddies)
  • 8 cups of oat circles (AKA Cheerios)
  • 4 cups pretzels
  • 2 1/4 cup peanuts or other nuts

Mix them all together in a big roasting pan, then sprinkle them with

  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 2 teaspoons onion salt

Bake and stir for about 1 1/2 hours in a 200 degree oven.

Cool, then store in covered jars.

And eat.

Nutritional Information

Good for you in many ways (especially if you use high fibre cereals) but high in sodium thanks to the celery and onion salt.  To make less salty, substitute for onion powder and other spices like garlic.
